Ostuni, the white city, dominates a plain of olive trees, symbol of this land. The lime covers the walls of the old town centre, creating magical glares and a blinding light. This phenomenon was documented since Middle Ages, when the lime was used to make visible the profile of the narrow streets of the old town.
Ostuni is located in the south of Murgia upland and was built on three hills. The modern name originates from the ancient name Astunium: “astu neon”, new city. It was founded by the Byzantines, conquered by the Normans in 1071 and after it became a possession of the Aragonese. In the modern period it was attributed first to the County of Lecce, then to the Principality of Taranto and finally  at the Duchy of Bari.

The city is enclosed by the Aragonese walls that defend the artistic jewels inside. Entering the heart of the old town, among the narrow streets, you can cruise following curiosity, instinct, voices and music.
Start your visit from the Cathedral, in Balio Square, the highest area of the city. The kings of Naples built this church in the fifteenth century. It has outstanding features, such as the beautiful rose window among the largest in the world. It also has an unusual facade with a Gothic portals finely sculpted and inside the paintings are rich in details.

The Cathedral Square and Freedom Square are crowded, but if you walk away and enter in hidden and narrow streets you are surrounded by white walls, cacti and bougainvillea. When the sun is up have a tour on the bastions, reaching the different doors of the city and admiring it from above; the houses seem to shine in the daylight and the flowers have sparkling colors.

The whitewashed houses get inflamed by the orange rays of the sun at sunset, and the light expands itself in the alleys of the city. In the evening, a lot of people walk in the street or seat on the steps in the square drinking a cold beer.
Walking around alleys, enjoying the traditional flavors of the cuisine of Puglia, discovering hiddens corners. Ostuni is seducing in the morning thanks to the light through its narrow streets and is charming with moonlight, because it is romantic in every corner.

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal. I must say that you’ve done a excellent job with this. Also, the blog loads super fast for me on Opera. Outstanding Blog!

I’ve been browsing on-line more than 3 hours nowadays, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It’s beautiful price sufficient for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the net shall be much more helpful than ever before. “We are not retreating – we are advancing in another Direction.” by Douglas MacArthur.
