Tempo di percorrenza: da un’ora a tutta la vita
Ci sono 3 modi per visitare New York: avere un itinerario preciso e dettagliato che scandisca i posti da vedere secondo per secondo; restare fermi immobili in strada ed osservare il mondo che passa; o in alternativa, VIVERCI.
La Grande Mela è un incredibile e stupefacente concentrato di esperienze, genti, stimoli, luoghi, culture e attrazioni che non finiscono mai di raccontare quello che hanno da dire…
Il tempo non basta mai. Ci sarà sempre ancora qualcosa da vedere, e quindi, o si visita l’essenziale o si osserva il mondo che ti passa sotto gli occhi a Time Square, il centro di Manhattan.

La scoperta della città per eccellenza può cominciare così, fermandosi sulle scale rosse all-glass di Time Square, sedersi con uno smoothy tra le mani ed osservare quello c’è intorno. Cartelloni pubblicitari al neon, telegiornali dal mondo, indici Dow Jones che scorrono lungo gli enormi grattacieli, e i newyorkesi che corrono da un lato all’altro dell’intersezione tra Broadway e la Seventh Avenue.
Forse è questa la caratteristica più assurda della città che non dorme mai: la velocità!
Come in un film riavvolto a velocità aumentata, a New York sembra che tutto scorra troppo velocemente per essere messo a fuoco!

A New York si ha tutto il mondo a portata di mano, da Uptown a Downtown. C’è così tanto da fare e da vedere, che sia la prima o la centesima visita, la lista di cose imperdibili è sempre ricca.
I posti da visitare sono direttamente proporzionali al tempo a disposizione, ma l’unico modo per conoscere realmente New York sarebbe solamente viverci! Allora non resta che stilare una lista di must che, anche se solo brevemente, consenta di vivere la città non con gli occhi del classico turista.

1. Passeggiare sul punte di Brooklyn insieme alle 6.000 persone a piedi o in bicicletta che ogni giorno ne attraversano i quasi 2 km. Ogni ora è quella giusta, ma al tramonto e all’alba, quando meno caotico e la luce all’altezza migliore, il ponte si riveste di una magia indescrivibile. In alternativa, passeggiare all’imbrunire lungo il percorso sotto il ponte. Sarà uno spettacolo vedere le luci dei grattacieli accendersi finestra per finestra al calare della luce.
Un consiglio: Foto! Foto! Foto!

2. Visitare il MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) e perdersi tra Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh e Andy Warhol.
Impossibile da visitare tutto in poco tempo, la strategia migliore è cominciare dal quinto piano e procedere secondo un gradiente di interesse tendenzialmente decrescente. Le Danzatrici di Matisse, le immense Ninfee di Monet, la sala con i Kandinsky e i vari Picasso (La chitarra, Autoritratto, I tre musici, Il Pierrot, le Damoiselle d’Avignon…) saranno solo alcune delle opere che avrete la fortuna di ammirare.
Nell’organizzazione del percorso conviene calcolare un’oretta in più per riprendersi dalla sindrome di Stendhal da cui potreste essere colpiti dopo aver visto la Notte stellata di Van Gogh.

3. Girare per strada e scattare foto a caso. A New York, in qualsiasi momento c’è qualcosa, una persona, una situazione o un angolo di strada da fotografare. Da Chinatown, a Little Italy o Soho, lo spettro varia dal turista a bocca aperta, al newyorkese che corre a lavoro, passando per l’artista di strada che suona in mutande e cappello da cowboy e l’uomo-pubblicità vestito da Darth Vader…

4. Toccare i testicoli del Charging Bull, il toro di Wall Street che si trova nel Financial District, il cuore economico e del potere di Manhattan.

La Downtown è la zona più vecchia di New York, di giorno è affollatissima di “cravatte” e “valigette” che lavorano nel centro dell’alta finanza americana e mondiale, ed è sede del quartiere finanziario dove qualche anno fa dominavano il panorama le Torri Gemelle. Proseguire il giro fino al Ground Zero, un’enorme depressione profonda decine di metri, che occupa attualmente l’area dove sorgevano le Twin Towers e il “9/11 Memorial e Museum”, centro per la memoria delle vittime.

5. Fare una corsetta lungo i 341 ettari di Central Park, riprendere fiato sulla riva di uno dei laghi, magari il Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir (bacino idrico artificiale di appena 1,000,000,000 di galloni di acqua); sedersi sul fungo del brucaliffo della statua di alice nel paese delle meraviglie o fingere di leggere dal libro della scultura di Hans Christian Andersen; canticchiare una canzone dei Beatles con l’artista di strada di turno a Strawberry Fields, zona dedicata alla memoria di John Lennon. Tenere un occhio al mosaico con la scritta Imagine e l’altro all’appartamento di Yoko Ono, che abita tuttora al Dakota Palace.

Piccolo dettaglio, a NYC nei parchi e per strada è vietato fumare… I like!

6. Mangiare e bere qualsiasi cosa per strada (per le istruzioni vedere i newyorkesi in azione).
Gli americani sono fantastici. La storia dell’evoluzione per loro è continuata con lo sviluppo di alcune capacità sociopolitiche molto particolari, come correre, mangiare, bere, stringere alleanze e vestirsi in strada. Contemporaneamente. Basta fermarsi sulla Lexington Avenue tra la 42nd e la 43rd o ad un angolo qualsiasi della strada all’orario di apertura degli uffici!

7. Prendere il battello che da Battery Park porta a Liberty Island. Cercare con tutte le proprie forze di conquistare un posto panoramico e viaggiare verso Lady Liberty e intanto fotografare lo skyline della grande mela. Un esperienza molto toccante…

8. Salire al 70° piano del Top of The Rock al Rockfeller Center e godere dell’eccezionale vista a 360° della città, Empire State Building compreso. L’alternativa sarebbe quella di salire direttamente sull’Empire, ma c’è più fila, e a NYC perdere tempo è un lusso eccessivo.
La visuale è la migliore, o almeno lo è nell’attesa del prossimo osservatorio, che sicuramente sarà aperto sulla Freedome Tower, l’ultimo nato tra i grattacieli di NYC, che riempie il buco lasciato dalle Twin Towers.

9. Mangiare da Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, una catena di ristoranti specializzati in pesce e frutti di mare, ispirato al film Forrest Gump. Ricordatevi di fermare il cameriere girando un cartello su “STOP FOREST” o “RUN FOREST”.
Un sguardo al menù: gamberetti fritti, strafritti, fritti con salse, strafritti con patatine… insomma, qui servono qualsiasi forma e sottoforma del crostaceo in olio bollente.

10. Guardare le vetrine sulla Fifth Avenue e magari prestarsi alla canonica foto con il pacchetto verde sotto l’insegna Tiffany & Co, o in alternativa c’è la versione ironica della foto con cornetto e cappuccino che strizza l’occhio a Truman Capote.

11. Perdersi tra la folla e divincolarsi tra uomini in giacca e cravatta, donne manager, spider man e super man.

12. Giocare a scacchi in uno dei molti parchi della città.
New York, anche se è la metropoli delle metropoli, possiede numerosi bellissimi parchi dove poter trascorrere qualche ora di relax lontani dal frastuono delle strade intasate dal traffico. Tra un grattacielo e l’altro troverete Bryant Park, New York Botanical Garden, e Bronx Zoo sono solo alcune delle oasi di ristoro per cittadini e turisti.

13. Ascoltare gospel ad Harlem, quartiere nero di Manhattan. I cori che intonano “Oh Happy Day” a cappella sono una delle cose migliori che vi può regalare un viaggio a New York.

14. Vivere e respirare a pieni polmoni la città delle città!

Vivere New York City, più che un viaggio è un esperienza…
New York non è un posto che ti fa battere il cuore, ma che stravolge l’intero elettrocardiogramma. È tachicardia e bradicardia. È quel battito asincrono che in un secondo pompa sangue in tutti i muscoli del corpo. É quel pensiero che ti fa ripetere “ritornerò, ritornerò!”.
