Armenia e Georgia (Orientale) in cinque e quattr’otto

Caucaso, crocevia. Coacervo di storia, di quella più remota, di storie tra le più leggendarie, di razze, di etnie, di culture, di periodi, di ritrovamenti, di religioni, radici, insediamenti. La dimensione spaziale in comune al mondo noto e al non noto, un obbligato passaggio di congerie millenarie.

Da queste parti ci son passati tutti, popoli e protagonisti, condottieri e santi, chiunque abbia preso posto nella storia che conta, dai persiani a Noè, passando per i legionari romani, arrivando fino alle armate sovietiche. Il Caucaso è un capitello fregiato da ogni stile, che accoglie e conserva, e fa patrimonio delle cicatrici degli altri.

 Un viaggio sembrava doveroso, a me – italiano, a un amico turco e a un’amica russa – d’origini armene. Sembrava che ognuno di noi avesse trovato nel Caucaso la possibilità di cogliere un tassello introspettivo, storico, recente o lontano nel tempo, la fortuna di ritrovarsi in quello che non abbiamo avuto modo di essere, ma che ci contraddistingue a livello identitario, e che probabilmente avremmo potuto accomunare grazie al Caucaso stesso.

Non più di nove giorni, ché le ferie hanno una scadenza e il dovere (ri)chiama, e tagliato – purtroppo – fuori l’Azerbaijan, colpa mia, che trovandomi in Turchia non mi è stato semplicissimo procurarmi un visto per tempo. Di ripiego, ci siamo focalizzati sulle altre due nazioni, con la fortuna che, da qualche tempo, per noi italiani non son previsti visti d’alcun genere.

Il luogo più remoto sembrava l’Armenia, già per la complessità di raggiungerla via terra. L’Armenia, che vanta ottime relazioni con Russia, Stati Uniti e Iran – caso più che raro al mondo -, ma con questioni decennali aperte con i più prossimi vicini: questioni territoriali a est, con l’Azerbaijan, e questioni politiche, relative alla spinosa storia del Genocidio, a ovest, con la Turchia. Entrambe situazioni che hanno imbottigliato l’(ormai) esile Armenia in confini rigidamente chiusi. Dalla stessa Turchia, non è semplicissimo accederci via-aerea, e questa è stata una delle prime questioni da risolvere.

Abbiamo usato la gioviale Georgia per aggirare ogni tipo di complicazione, atterrando e decollando dal minuscolo aeroporto di Tbilisi, impiegando un semplice giorno in più (il numero “cinque” del “quattr’otto”), ma che in ultima analisi ha fornito una nota di colore in più all’intero viaggio.

E il viaggio, eccolo di seguito. Dettagliato solo dalla nostra, personalissima esperienza.

GIORNO #1_Atterraggio a Tbilisi, e attesa del terzo membro.

Per me e per Gürkan (il turco), il volo da Istanbul è partito di primo mattino, raggiungendo la capitale georgiana quando l’alba ancora non si destava, verso le 5.30. Per l’eccitazione del viaggio stesso, io personalmente non avevo chiuso occhio, mentre Gürkan trovava comodo qualsiasi forma di giaciglio. Abbiamo atteso in aeroporto che le corse del comodo autobus n. 37 cominciassero il loro regolare tran-tran, a intervalli di mezz’ora. La soluzione-treno, per raggiungere la stazione principale della città (chiamata semplicemente “Stazione Centrale”, manco a dirlo), m’era stata più volte sconsigliata dai vari uffici di informazione presenti in aeroporto.

Decidiamo di inoltrarci nella città, nell’attesa di Maria, la russa, l’altro membro del gruppo, il cui arrivo era previsto per le 16.00, anche perché avevamo ancora il dubbio di riuscire a trovare posti disponibili sul treno notturno che quella sera c’avrebbe dovuto scarrozzare a Yerevan fino al prossimo mattino (garantendoci anche un posto letto, allo stesso tempo, sprovvisti come eravamo di qualsiasi prenotazione d’albergo). Il tempo di cambiare la valuta, da dollari in lari (il cambio è praticamente identico, in ogni zona della città, anche in aeroporto), e prendiamo posto in un vecchio rottame sovietico perfettamente funzionante, uno dei tanti 37 che fanno sosta proprio di fronte all’(unica) porta d’uscita dell’aeroporto.

Il percorso, di una 15ina di chilometri, alternava, lungo lo stradone esterno, case popolari di almeno 60 anni, a edifici ultramoderni. Il primo impatto con la Georgia è colorato dalla volontà della nazione di spogliarsi di un recente passato e donarsi, moderna e (ri)pulita, all’Europa avanguardista. Giunti a ridosso del centro, invece, le architetture mutavano aspetto, in un guazzabuglio di stili piuttosto confuso, ma piuttosto elegante e accogliente.

Giunti in stazione, ci comunicano che per prendere i tre biglietti c’era bisogno dei tre passaporti. Speravamo nella possibilità di procurarci un tetto all’istante, preoccupati dal fatto che era stato praticamente impossibile effettuare una prenotazione on-line, con il rischio di non trovare posti disponibile. E invece nulla, alle 10 del mattino ci ritroviamo ad attendere Maria per circa sei ore, a vagare senza meta, prima di comprendere se dovevamo (già) pensare a un Piano B.

Un’ottima occasione, comunque, per prendere un po’ confidenza con la città. Zaini in spalla, ci addentriamo in via Regina Tamar, proseguendo lungo via Merab Kostava, fino raggiungere la zona di Rustaveli e il centro storico di Tbilisi. L’impatto è simile a qualsiasi Paese post-sovietico, dai palazzi alla gente, con quei segni – duri a smaltire – del paradigma “ricchi più ricchi, poveri più poveri”, tipico di una nazione divenuta indipendente agli inizi degli anni ’90.

In giro per la città, l’inglese è piuttosto diffuso, dagli esercizi al personale di stazioni e rimesse, in un trilinguismo dilagante che comprende anche georgiano e russo.

Straziati da un giorno da erranti, massacrati dal peso dei nostri 50 litri, e con un misero pisolino di soli 20 minuti sotto l’obelisco di Piazza della Libertà, ecco finalmente giungere Maria, con la quale riusciamo a trovare una cuccetta in seconda classe, a soli 55 Lari (circa 25 euro a persona). Attendiamo il nostro treno, in partenza dalla stazione alle ore 21.16.

Un ammasso di ferro rumoroso approccia a una piattaforma priva di qualsiasi indicazione, ma altri passeggeri ci informano che sì, è quello il nostro treno.

Stipati in un loculo rivestito in legno, dal puro stile vintage anni ’50, comincia la nostra avventura ferroviaria. Il fatto di trovarsi in un vero e proprio pezzo da museo, mi dava l’ebbrezza di non volermi perdere il momento. O semplicemente ne ero terrorizzato, abituato com’ero a un certo tipo di tecnologia. Sta di fatto che, nonostante stremato, non riuscivo comunque a chiudere occhio se non per un paio d’ore, inclinato com’ero su una delle due brandine superiori, e impegnato com’ero a seguire metro-metro il percorso, siglato da uno spaventoso rumore di ferraglia dalle varie sfumature, che non la smetteva di alimentare la mia patologica insonnia.

In più, giunti verso il confine, vennero a chiederci i passaporti. Quello russo e quello italiano erano semplici librettini da timbri doganali; quello turco, con su impresso una nitida mezzaluna, sortiva a hostess e a autorità un effetto un po’ diverso. Da quelle parti, la questione armena è ancora accesissima: nei volti rassegnati e negli animi degli armeni s’avvertono ancora ferite fresche, ed è inoltre più che raro ritrovarsi faccia a faccia con un turco, di quelli in carne e ossa. Ognuno degli armeni che ha approcciato alla nostra cuccetta ha avuto una reazione diversa, un misto di volontà di contenersi, affettare la propria accoglienza, e superare il macigno storico. Ma una insolita tensione, anche per noi, compagni di viaggio, era palpabile nell’aria (viziata) di quel treno, a presentarci il contesto in cui stavamo andando a immergerci per i prossimi quattro giorni…
